The Lighter Side of Breastfeeding
When women think about breastfeeding in public, all too many tense up and think "No WAY!" but there is a lighter side to all of this breastfeeding business. Here are a few funny antidotes to lighten your day. By Christina at
The Milk Mama
Just for fun. These aren’t necessarily my favorite places to breastfeed. But they all have been the most memorable for some positive reason. 1. Breastfeeding support group. A bunch of moms sitting around, with cookies and fruit, bonding over our babies. I wish all mothers everywhere had a local group like this. 2. My grandfather’s funeral. I flew across the country with my 10-week-old baby to be there for it, and I wasn’t about to let a fussy baby force me to leave the service. I nursed him through the entire thing, and both he and I were so grateful. Many people praised him afterward for being “such a good baby, we didn’t hear a peep out of him!” 3. In my bed. Hundreds of times. In the early weeks of sleep deprivation, there was no better place to feed my baby. 4. The
mother's room
at our local Westfield Shopping mall. I would have been fine with a chair in a quiet corner in a store, but then I discovered the comfortable, well-decorated mother’s room. They even have small rooms with curtains if you want more privacy. 5. An adorable little shop outside of Los Angeles called
Bellies, Babies, and Bosoms in Glendale, California
Cute, cozy atmosphere and so many great baby things to look at. 6. On the beach. The breeze, the crashing waves, palm trees, cuddling my baby. . . heavenly.
Things I didn't know
As a new mother I read the books, got the weekly emails about how my pregnancy was going and what to do when the baby comes. Sometimes I follow things too closely and should really go with the flow. Here are things that I learned and will either bring with me when I breastfeed my next expected bundle of joy or leave far, far behind.1. I should've bought stock in Kleenex When I read all of the books on what breastfeeding positions were best, whenever it came time to nurse my daughter, I propped up the pillows... I had a bottle of water, something to read or a remote for the tv close enough to reach, the cordless phone... and tissues. I had a box of tissues with me every time because milk would drip out of her mouth and end up all over the pillow, her face and me. When I nursed her, I didn't move. If there was something I forgot too bad because I wasn't moving. Why? Hard to say. Next time I'll let the milk dribble... I'll nurse my baby while holding him in my arms or in a sling and allow myself to roam free. 2. How do you turn it off?! A few times in the beginning of our breastfeeding relationship when my boobs were getting used to the amount of milk to produce, I would have too much and when she should unlatch... the stream of milk kept going and would squirt her all over the face! Where's the off switch?! Again with the Kleenex... 3. Breast pump terror. It took me a while to work up the courage to use a breast pump for the first time. Any woman who's seen one always crosses her arms across her chest just as fast as a man protects his crotch when he's breaking up with his girlfriend. The sound of it alone makes you cringe and I must have checked to see if it was on the lowest setting 7 times before attaching it to me. Really, it's not so bad but why I thought the milk would come out as fast as a cow, I'll never know.
Funny stories from our readers!
From Tracey-Jane at bras4mums:
I used to feed during Church services - favourite was at a TV screening ofSongs of Praise when baby 3 weeks old! Also, remember opening the door to the postman. He peered over to take a peek, before realizing what it was I was doing! That baby is now 8 years old - how time flies!
From Tracey in Alberta, Canada
I was nursing my daughter - my first baby at the time. No one had told me about the imfamous third day flow! I went to latch her on, and noticed a string floating in the air between her and my breast. I kept trying to grab it, but just couldn't seem to get a hold of this phantom string... I realized when I looked at my daughters srunched up, soaked face that it was not in fact
a string floating magically in the air - it was my milk that had just come in and was now on it's way out! Poor girl! We had a bath after that, and I started using nursing pads after that!
