How to Make Your Retail Business "Breastfeeding Friendly"

Breastfeeding is natural and women are designed for it. Breastfeeding is convenient and is perfect to feed your baby in any retail business. Anytime, anywhere. Even if you're out for coffee with a friend, at the park or in the mall, breast milk is always readily available the instant your baby is hungry. welcome-open-retail-business-breastfeeding-nursing-friendly-sign Nursing your baby reduces diseases, allergies, developmental problems for the duration of the breastfeeding relationship and as far as into adulthood. Healthier babies who turn into healthy adults mean less health care costs for your community!

Not only will you be helping your community, you'll also be helping your business. If breastfeeding moms know that they're welcome in your establishment, the more business you will receive and remember, most women love to tell their friends when they find a great product or service!
How can you as a retail business owner do to help make moms be more comfortable to breastfeed in public?

When you see a mom come in with a baby:

• Don't ignore her, make eye contact with mom and give her a little smile showing her you support her.

• Make conversation. Ask her about her little one. Moms love to talk about their little angels.

• Make sure she's comfortable. Ask her where she'd prefer to sit. Most moms would like a booth or a out-of-the-way table instead of being in the middle of the restaurant.

• If another customer complains, be friendly and explain that women have a right to breastfeed their babies in public. Check the laws in your area so you are up to date.

• Be humorous and you'll find most customers will be more likely to accept. e.g. "If we can eat out, why can't a baby?"

• Make good use of one of our breastfeeding friendly signs. Display them promptly in your window so everyone can see them and let mothers know that you're accepting. Even if they don't breastfeed themselves, it's quite possible they know a mom who does!

• Install a changing station in your restrooms, in the men as well as the womens. Even if you have small restrooms, you can install a change table that mounts onto the wall. If you have the room, include a few wipes and maybe some diapers just in case mom or dad forgot them.

• Be sure that your staff is fully aware of your new policy and be diligent that it is being followed at all times.

Make a change for our future. The more mothers breastfeed in public, it will become widely accepted and just a part of society.
